A Leaf with Love

                     ---------Reading after The Last Leaf

I read a good short story called The Last Leaf during the holiday. When I read the last sentence of the story, I was shocked. Then I was deeply moved by it. The writer, O.Henry, is good at writing short stories. The endings of his stories usually are very surprising. This story is no exception.

The story tells us a story about love and faith. In a hospital, there was a young girl, Johnsy. She suffered from pneumonia. She was very depressed. She always looked at the Ivy leaves out of the window, and she thought she would die when the last leaf fell down. In the same hospital, there was a old man, Mr. Berman, who was a painter, suffered from pneumonia too. He heard about it. He wanted to help her. One night, a storm came. Mr. Berman knew the last leaf would fell down. He braved the storm, stepped on the ladder, drew a Ivy leaf on the wall. Johnsy renewed hope. But after a few days, Mr. Berman died because of the storm.

We know the truth until the end. The ending of this story is surprising. We are shocked but we feel moved more. A leaf can save a girl’s life. It sounds very unbelievable. But the leaf is not just a life; it stands for love and faith. A old painter’s love can save her. After reading it, tears blurred my eyes, I think of how great the old painter. An ordinary painter, in order to save a girl, paid with his life.  I seem to see the face of him with a brilliant smile. He finally has had his wish. That leaf becomes his work. I think if he were alive, he would think so.
